Sandbar at Kaneohe Bay, Oahu, HI

Only accessible by boat, the Kaneohe Bay Sandbar is a tranquil place bordered by the majestic Koolau mountain range.  On the way out to the sandbar you will pass Coconut Island where some of Gilligan’s Island was filmed.  You may also see sea turtles going on their graceful way. Once the boat is anchored you can hop out of the boat and take in the beautiful aqua blue water that is not very deep and goes on for what seems like miles. If it’s low tide it’s just soft sand between your toes. Many people bring a football or a volleyball net and get a game on, some even picnic there, while others just sunbathe on their boats or lounge in their floats.  We walked pretty far out and discovered sea turtles in their natural habitat. Also, sometimes when it’s negative tide people host bonfires. The sandbar is a gorgeous, fun, relaxing place surrounded by lush green mountains. It’s a must experience!!

You may not be a local or have a boat so contact Mike from Kaneohe Bay Boaters on You must pick the time you want to go, he usually has the dates posted on his site when he will be venturing out there. He does charge a small fee and you will have to supply your own food, drinks and sunblock, he supplies the ice and coolers. Like any outing you wont know who else is joining but it’s a great way to meet new people. Mike is a ex-military guy who likes to talk to people and enjoys sharing the sandbar with folks by taking them out on his vessel. Now go experience it!!
